  5.     Another American hostage, Jesse Turner, 44, was released in
  6. Beirut last week, and once again the process followed a
  7. familiar pattern. One of the pro-Iranian Lebanese groups
  8. provided new evidence concerning the fate of one of the five
  9. Israeli soldiers still unaccounted for in Lebanon. Jerusalem
  10. responded by ordering the release of 15 Lebanese Shi`ite
  11. prisoners. That gesture, in turn, led to the freeing of Turner,
  12. a former mathematics professor who had been held for four years
  13. and nine months.

  15.     The pace of release is quickening now. The fear, however,
  16. is that if the process is not completed by Dec. 31, when U.N.
  17. Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar leaves office, the
  18. momentum may again be lost.
